When it is indicated

  • Decrease the size of the forehead, make the face more proportional and symmetrical;
  • Fighting the signs of aging, such as wrinkles and expression lines.

During the consultation, the plastic surgeon makes an assessment to know the best procedure and the technique to be used, according to the objectives, the characteristics of the skin and the structure of the person.

The doctor can also complement frontoplasty with other surgical procedures, such as blepharoplasty, for example, which is made to remove excess fat from the eyelids and look up.

How is the preparation

Frontoplasty preparation includes a doctor’s assessment to verify the risk of complications during and after surgery.

Thus, the plastic surgeon usually requests blood tests to evaluate coagulation, liver function, renal function and blood glucose, as well as urine examination and electrocardiogram.

The doctor also makes a physical assessment and risk factors present, such as obesity, smoking, advanced age and the presence of diseases such as diabetes and heart problems, for example.

In addition, the surgeon also passes guidelines that should be followed weeks or days before surgery. These guidelines may include interrupting the use of some medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements; stop smoking; and decrease the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

How frontoplasty is made

Frontoplasty can be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the type of this procedure.

In general, frontoplasty can be performed through two techniques:

  • Frontoplasty with coronal incision, which is the most common type, being made under general anesthesia and consists of performing a cut on the scalp, behind the hair deployment line, which can leave a scar;
  • Endoscopic frontoplastywhere small incisions are made on the scalp, behind the line of implantation of the wires. This procedure has a shorter recovery time and postoperative swelling, and lower chances of temporary loss of local sensitivity, however it is a more expensive and longer procedure.

After cutting, the doctor takes off the scalp, preserving nerves and local vessels. Then a scalp strip is removed, in case of reducing the forehead, and repositioning the skin at the correct location.

Frontoplasty time may vary according to the complexity of the surgical procedure and may last between 30 minutes to 3 hours.

How is recovery

After surgery, it is indicated that the person remains in the hospital until the effect of anesthesia passes and may be discharged on the same day.

It is indicated that the person is at rest for about 48 hours and avoid lowering the head and can also be indicated to avoid physical activity for up to 30 days.

In some cases, the use of a range may be indicated to prevent scar exposure and to ensure the result of the procedure.

It is also recommended to perform a daily hygiene of the scalp and scar, and the application of an anti-inflammatory and healing ointment in some situations.

Possible complications

Most complications after surgery reverse each other without a problem. However, swelling on the face is a possible complication that can arise after frontoplasty and can last up to 10 days, improving as healing happens.

In addition, hematomas and infection at the points of surgery may also arise, which can reach the nerves of the facial region and decrease sensitivity at the scar site, and may last up to 3 months or permanent.

Already the scar on the scalp can cause hair loss in the place, and can be treated with hair implant, an aesthetic procedure where artificial hair is placed in the place where there was hair loss.
