The labor plan aims to customize the moment of delivery, which should be very special for parents, and keep them as informed as possible about the procedures that will be performed.

Despite the existence of the delivery plan, the medical team is the way of conducting childbirth, as the health of women and baby should be taken into account. In cases where the delivery plan is not followed in full, the doctor should make a justification.

So that Serve

The delivery plan serves to meet the mother’s preferences regarding the entire delivery process, including the execution of some medical procedures, provided they are based on scientifically proven and updated information.

How to make the birth plan

The delivery plan should be done and discussed together with professionals who will assist childbirth in order to ensure that on the day of delivery everything runs as planned.

To prepare the delivery plan, you can use a delivery plan supplied by a healthcare professional (which can be found on the internet) or the pregnant woman can choose to write her own plan in a personalized way.

The delivery plan should be printed on two ways: one that should be delivered to the maternity team or hospital at the time of delivery and another that should be with the pregnant woman’s companion, so that she can consult whenever questions arise about the women’s choices.

Some maternities and hospitals already offer an exclusive consultation for making the delivery plan, and in this case, the document is filed in the woman’s form before hospitalization for delivery.

What should you have in the delivery plan

In the delivery plane, the pregnant can mention:

  • Place where you want to be delivered;
  • Conditions of the environment in which the birth will be performed, such as lighting, music, photos or videos, among others;
  • Escorts who want to be present;
  • Whether or not it accepts the presence of students and interns in the delivery room;
  • Medical interventions that you want to do, such as oxytocin administration, analgesia, episiotomy, enema, removal of pubic hair or active management of the placenta;
  • Type of food or drinks that will ingest;
  • If you want an artificial rupture of the amniotic bag;
  • Baby expulsion position;
  • When you want to start breastfeeding;
  • When clampering and cut the umbilical cord;
  • Interventions performed in the newborn, such as airway and stomach aspiration, use of silver nitrate eye drops, pacifiers, bottles or artificial milk.

In addition, some women also choose the presence of a double, who is a professional who accompanies pregnancy and provides emotional and practical support to the pregnant woman before and during delivery, which should also be mentioned in the birth plan.
