Bigger and deadlier. It became known which cancer is more common in Russia

In Russia, more than 600 thousand people are diagnosed with cancer every year. The incidence is increasing year by year. This is explained by the fact that, in general, people began to turn to oncologists more often, including as part of the medical examination program, and diagnostic methods are being improved every year.

What cancer diseases are detected most often?

In 2023 (statistics for 2024 have not yet been processed), 674,587 cases of malignant cancer were identified.

The most common diagnosis was skin cancer, with 91,867 cases among both men and women.

In men, prostate cancer is most often diagnosed – 58,847 people, lung cancer is in second place (44,628 cases), and skin cancer is in third place (34,636 cases).

Women were most often diagnosed with breast cancer (82,499 cases), skin cancer in second place (57,231 cases), and uterine cancer in third place (29,233 cases).

In 2023, 284,320 people died from cancer in Russia – 151,562 men, 132,758 women.

Cancer of the trachea, lungs and bronchi (48,104 people) claimed the most lives of both men and women, followed by stomach cancer in second place (24,491 people), and colon cancer in third place (24,392 people).

In men, cancer mortality was distributed as follows. 37,921 people died from cancer of the trachea, bronchi and lungs. From stomach cancer – 14,369 people, from prostate cancer – 13,653 people.

Among women, among the causes of mortality, breast cancer is in first place by a wide margin; 20,608 people died from it; colon cancer is in second place, causing the death of 13,582 people; pancreatic cancer is in third place; 10,854 people died from it.
