Tetralysal is an antibiotic medication that has lymecycline in its composition, and is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to tetracyclines. It is generally used to treat acne vulgaris and rosacea, whether or not associated with specific topical treatment.
This medicine can be used in adults and children over 8 years of age, because use by younger children can increase the risk of developing dental enamel hypoplasia and permanent pigmentation of the teeth.
Tetralysal can be found in the form of 150 to 300 mg capsules and can be purchased in conventional pharmacies upon presentation of a prescription.
What is it for
The main indications for Tetralysal are:
- Acne;
- Ear, nose and throat infection;
- Gastrointestinal infection;
- Urinary infection;
- Non-gonococcal urethritis;
- Trachoma.
Furthermore, this medication can also be used by people allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics to treat syphilis and Lyme disease, for example.
How it works
Tetralysal has a substance called lymecycline in its composition, which is an antibiotic and inhibits the growth of susceptible microorganisms, mainly Propionibacterium acnes, on the surface of the skin, reducing the concentration of free fatty acids in sebum. Free fatty acids are substances that facilitate the appearance of pimples and promote skin inflammation.

How to use
For adults and children over 12 years of age, the recommended dose to treat acne is 1 capsule of 300 mg per day or 1 capsule of 150 mg in the morning and another in the evening, for 8 to 12 weeks, depending on medical indications. The dose for children between 8 and 11 years of age must be indicated by the pediatrician.
In the case of treatment for other infections, the recommended daily dose is 600 mg, divided into two doses of 300 mg each, for the time established by the doctor.
Tetralysal capsules should be swallowed whole, along with a glass of water, without breaking or chewing and should only be taken according to your doctor’s instructions.
Possible side effects
Some of the most common side effects that may occur during treatment are nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and headache. Furthermore, if given to children under 8 years of age, it may cause tooth enamel hypoplasia and permanent pigmentation of the teeth.
Tetralysal may also cause serious allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention. Therefore, it is recommended to discontinue use of the medication and seek urgent medical help if symptoms such as difficulty breathing, sensation of having the throat closed, swelling of the throat, tongue or face, and/or intense itching appear.
Who shouldn’t use
Tetralysal is contraindicated for children under 8 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients undergoing treatment with oral retinoids and with allergies to tetracyclines or any of the formula’s components.
Furthermore, this medicine should not be used in people with kidney or liver disease without first talking to your doctor.
