Not only hypertension. It became known what diseases depression leads to

It is well known that against the backdrop of depression, any disease proceeds more difficult. But it turns out that depression can lead to new diseases, provoking them. This was proved in a big study, published in the authoritative scientific journal Plos Medicine.

Depression is the most common psyche disease. More than 300 million people are sick in the world, that is, about one out of 23 people suffer from her. It is suffering: she makes life unbearable, and the burden of diseases burns multiply. It is more difficult to treat such patients, their prognosis is worse, and personal experiences of the disease are much harder. Therefore, depression, even regardless of severity, increases mortality.

Such a large study was carried out for the first time

Scientists from Edinburgh set themselves the goal – to trace how diseases in people with depression develop and accumulate. For seven years, they observed more than 172 thousand people, information about which is stored in the Biobank of the UK. The age of patients at the beginning of the study was from 40 to 71 years. The assessment included 69 diseases. It is important that they had never been evaluated in such a large number before.

30,770 people (17.8 %) initially had depression and their health was already worse – they had on average three chronic diseases, then, as peers usually had two such ailments.

When the study began, the three most common diseases in people with depression were hypertension (found in 33.4 %), allergic and chronic rhinitis (in 32.4 %) and osteoarthritis (in 27.0 %). But the frequency with which these diagnoses have found in patients without depression – 29.6 %, 26.7 %and 19.1 %, respectively.

The further, the worse

And further, with depression, everything also developed worse. Such patients have acquired new diseases faster. On average, judging by people of the same age and gender, against the background of depression, new diseases developed 30 % faster than without it, that is, at an earlier age.
